The herpes simplex virus type 2 is the primary cause for genital herpes. The most common mode of HSV-2 transmission is during sexual intercourse, including oral sex. According to the CDC, about 20 percent of Americans, over 50 million people, are infected with genital herpes. The majority of these cases may be unaware they even have it. Genital herpes symptoms and outbreaks are similar to those of oral herpes, but the location in which they occur differs. For instance, genital herpes appears as small, red blisters that break open and leak a clear yellowish fluid. These small blisters may grow together until they become a large blister that, as it heals, gets yellow and crusty, eventually healing back into pink skin. When these blisters appear it is called an “outbreak”, and they appear around the genitals and rectum. Although the virus stays in the body indefinitely, the number of outbreaks will decrease throughout the years. Stress, sunlight, illness, menstruation, hormonal changes, and a fever can trigger an outbreak.
